Who We Are

Kyle & Natalie Blum

Kyle and Natalie Blum are one of the founding families behind Solar Shepherds and are deeply rooted in Northern Illinois agriculture. Kyle is a fourth-generation farmer who married his high school sweetheart, Natalie, and together they are raising their daughter while continuing a proud family farming legacy. Kyle and Natalie first met through FFA, where their shared passion for agriculture and stewardship began.

For more than 12 years, the Blums have raised sheep and managed livestock with a strong focus on animal health and land productivity. Over the past six years, they have implemented large-scale rotational grazing systems across row-crop acres within their family farm—marking the beginning of their transition into regenerative agriculture. This hands-on experience with integrated grazing and soil-building practices shapes their approach at Solar Shepherds, where they are committed to improving land health while supporting sustainable energy production.

Matthew and Michael Drendel

Twin brothers Matthew and Michael Drendel are another founding family of Solar Shepherds, raised on a seventh-generation row crop and beef farm in Northern Illinois. Growing up in a multigenerational farming operation instilled in them a strong respect for the land and a desire to improve it for future generations. Over 15 years ago, they introduced sheep into their operation, beginning a long-term commitment to integrated livestock systems.

Matthew earned a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness and a Masters of Science in Plant and Soil Science from Oklahoma State University. During that time, Michael stayed home on the family farm, where he led the early adoption of rotational grazing and regenerative management practices focused on rebuilding soil health and function. Together, their blend of formal education and hands-on experience drives Solar Shepherds’ mission to deliver practical, science-based grazing solutions that enhance both agricultural and solar landscapes.
